What type of vehicles are in your fleet?
When you are riding in the Black Hills National Forest, you should always keep in mind that the weather can change. It can be sunny and beautiful in the morning and get a rain shower in the afternoon. While storms don’t stick around very long (most of the time)- it is always better to be prepared. Please make sure you check the forecast for your riding day. Drivers license- you’ll need your driver’s license for our rentals. Helmet- we always recommend a helmet for all drivers and riders. Kids under the age of 18 are required by South Dakota state law to have a helmet on their heads at all times while in the machine. Helmets are provided with the rental fee- but we do always recommend bringing your own if you have one for your comfort. Sunglasses or Goggles: We keep a limited supply of goggles on hand to use during your rental, and our machines have full windshields, but it is always wise to have eye protection. So bring a pair of goggles or sunglasses. We do have sunglasses for purchase in-store as well. If the forecast calls for rain – please bring waterproof and breathable rain gear with you. Clothing – be prepared to get dusty and dirty out there. So we always advise you to bring clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and it is always wise to dress in layers (on those colder days). You are more than welcome to bring a change of clothes to change into using our facilities after your adventure. Sunscreen is always a good idea. Closed-toe shoes- sandals are not recommended. Water and food – our machines have room for coolers, so we always recommend having plenty of water and bringing food with you. There are beautiful places to stop for a picnic, or you can stop in Custer or Hill City and enjoy one of the many local restaurants. First Aid Kit – A first aid kit is essential. We want all of our customers to be safe – all of our retrieval vehicles have first aid kits in them – but it’s always great to be prepared with your own first aid kit.
What to bring?
Nope! All you need is a valid driver’s license. And the Slingshot is classified as auto-cycle, so you don’t need a motorcycle license in the State of South Dakota for any of our rentals.
Do I need a motorcycle license to drive a slingshot?
We have automatic and manual options available!
Slingshot options?
Yes! Your adventure starts with a full tank, and we ask that you return it the same way. Before you head out, we'll show you the fuel type, estimated range, and the best places to fill up—so you can spend more time exploring and less time searching for a gas station.
Fuel?
We accept cash (but will need a credit card on file). VISA, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. We do not accept checks.
Which payment method do you accept?
All rentals include safety equipment with the rental fee – we recommend bringing your own helmet if you have one – for your comfort. Rentals also include a comprehensive orientation during check-in. All side-by-side machines come equipped with a digital tablet with the Avenza Map APP pre-downloaded on it. This App is great for off-roading because it shows you where you are at all times. We drop pins on the maps to give you helpful little hints on where you might want to explore. The machines also come with a safety beacon feature for off-road safety is our number one priority for our customers and if something were to happen. You don’t have a cell phone signal; with this feature, you can contact emergency personnel immediately. They are provided with your exact location- however, all fees resulting in using this feature will be charged back to the customer. Insurance is included, plus we offer an additional add-on if you wish to cover tires and belts. GAS IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RENTAL PRICE – your machine will have a full tank of gas before you leave – please make sure you refuel your machine before returning it. If the machine is not refilled, there will be an additional charge of $35.00 to the card on file. The renter is liable for any damages to the machine – we offer additional insurance to cover you during your rental. We always recommend arriving at least 30 mins early for your rental, allowing you time to get your waiver filled out and go over the map and route with you. Please note EVERYONE WHO WILL BE RIDING IN THE MACHINE WILL NEED TO BE PRESENT TO SIGN THE WAIVER. This is very important – anyone riding in the machine will need to be on the waiver. Children under the age of 18 do not have to sign for themselves – but a parent or guardian will need to sign for them. If you are a large group – we recommend coming in the day before to do paperwork – this helps speed up your release time. We will get everyone sized for a helmet – this can take some time – so if you have your own DOT-certified helmets, you are more than welcome to bring them. We will go over the already downloaded map on the tablet in each machine with you and show you some helpful hints along the routes you decide to take. Our side-by-sides will be directed to the off-road trails – our Slingshots will be directed to on-road tour routes. We will also go over the machine – if you are not familiar with how to drive these machines, no worries, we help you with this. Adventure Rentals also supports Tread Lightly! principles, so we will go over these principles with you as well! We are here to help and happy to answer any questions you have. If you think of anything before the day of your rental, please feel free to call us (605-673-4540) or email us atv@adventurerentalssd.com

We had a great time. Rented the slingshot one morning and a side by side a couple days later. Both were very fun. Checkout was easily online. Paperwork doesn’t take long in the office before you’re on your way. Machines were all taken care of well. They give you a gps tablet for the side by side to show you what trail you’re on and shows all the trails available to you. Checkout was easy when we returned. Everyone was very kind and professional. Lots of fun trails. Bring a cooler for the side by sides to hold some drinks for you. Would recommend and we will use them again when we return out here for another vacation.

Not sure how a place can be thoroughly professional and laid back at the same time, but they were. We had an awesome time with beginners and veterans alike. The side-by-sides are very capable, user-friendly, and forgiving vehicles so anyone not sure they can handle them should not be worried. Their staff is very thorough and helpful while remembering that we're all there to have fun. Thank you for making it a great experience for our family. We would absolutely do it again and will recommend them to anyone coming to the Hills.

Our family had an absolute blast and our only complaint was that we didn't rent them for more days. I would recommend Adventure Rentals to anyone!

The wife and I were glamping close by at the Sheridan Lake Campground over the July 4th weekend and decided to do a half day (4hr) UTV rental through Adventure Rentals. Online booking was simple and quick. I knew exactly which vehicle I wanted to rent (RZR Ultimate) and we had our own full face helmets as we downhill mountain bike so we were ready for the adventure! We were closest to the Hill City location and the majority of the local trials are about a mile and a half down the road. The GPS supplied tablet made it so simple to find the desired route through the area. The vehicle was clean and fairly new (2025) and we had zero issues with it during the ride. We got about 23 miles in and the trails had plenty of variety. Got to see some of the local wildlife along the way and got really lucky with the weather (74F) for our Monday morning ride. I highly recommend doing weekday rides as the weekends can draw a lot of locals to these trails. Additionally, you can specify the HALF windshield because the full windshield will block ALL of the cool air which will keep you considerably cooler in the summer weather. Also the radiator is in the front with most of these vehicles and we’ll, all that heat travels into and through the inside which makes it a little less comfortable. Overall we an absolutely great time and would highly recommend Adventure Rentals for your off road excitement!

We rented a 5 seater and had a great day of riding through the Black Hills! We had 2 adults and 3 kids. The rental process was super easy and the tablet with real time mapping was awesome. We were able to see some really cool places that were pinned on the map for us. The staff also showed us how to get there on the map as well. We didn’t have any issues but we were given good instructions should issues arise. This is the second time we have rented through this company and will again in the future if we are in the area!

This was SO much FUN.BRING a bandana or ANYTHING to cover your mouth & nose.Super dusty!!Wear glasses!!We went for 4 hours, that was plenty of time to ride, hike, and get muddy. We all had to shower afterwards. We drove trails and the highway. They do sell clothes in the store but nothing to cover your face.Get there early to go over every thing. 18 and over can drive, people who are 18 and over. They had 3 different helmets to wear. If you don't have anything to cover your face, wear the helmet w a face shield. You'll thank me later 😄😎

My husband and I rented a UTV for a half-day adventure, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip to the Black Hills! From the moment we arrived, everyone at Adventure Rentals in Hill City was incredibly welcoming and friendly. They gave us clear, thorough instructions on operating the UTV and covered all the safety information we needed before heading out, which made us feel confident and prepared. The GPS was fantastic and very easy to follow. As someone who is VERY directionally challenged, I was able to successfully navigate my husband through the mountain trails without us having to file divorce papers afterward! 😂 The trails were also clearly marked and easy to follow, making the whole experience stress-free and enjoyable. We had an amazing time exploring the Black Hills and only wish we had planned for a longer rental. We’ll definitely be back on our next trip to tackle even more trails. If you’re looking for an unforgettable way to experience the Black Hills, I highly recommend Adventure Rentals!

We had a wonderful time renting from Adventure Rentals -Hill City. I was able to change my reservation easily when our plans changed. The staff was extremely friendly from check in, to route planning, to showing us how to operate the vehicle. We did have a slight mechanical issue while out on the trail but they quickly drove out and fixed it and we were off again. They extended our rental time for the inconvenience. Highly recommend.

Second time renting from Adventure Rental. Highly recommend them. This year we rented three vehicles for family outing in the incredible Black Hills. Had a flat tire early on and they were on it quickly which kept us rolling for the rest of the day. Their equipment, process and service is absolutely top notch. Our family, which included three grandchildren, had so much fun. Make sure you book with them first and unforgettable adventure!

I have a slingshot of my own but had to leave it behind for this trip. I was extremely bummed until I found Adventures…I rented for 24 hour period and it was a dream. I was able to see many awesome things in the hills and drive some of the best twisty turns roads. I loved it so much I reserved a rental from their Custer location for Tuesday! Lovely people and very informative if you are a beginner. (Which I’m not, but they were able to go through all the ins and outs of the machine)

This company is top notch. This was my first UTV rental experience and the company was amazing from start to finish. They get brand new UTV's every year so our machine was amazing. They also provide a tablet with a mapping system installed that works well so you know where to go. Their customer service was great, even when we got ourselves stuck on an expert level trail by accident. They came out and saved us and we're so nice about it. Rent from them with confidence.

This was our second-year renting from Adventure Rentals in Hill City, and it was just as amazing as the first! Last year, my husband and I rented a Razor Pro XP and had so much fun that we brought our grown children back this year and rented three Pro XP machines for a full-day ride again. The check-in process is smooth, and the GPS tablet with trail info is very user-friendly—even for first-time riders. About two hours in, we had an issue with one of the machines, but just like they explained at check-in, we texted them our location and coordinates. Within 20–25 minutes, they brought us a replacement machine, and we were back on the trails without missing a beat. Their responsiveness was outstanding!A full-day rental is definitely the way to go—half a day just wouldn’t be enough once you really start exploring the trails. We stopped for lunch at Mt. Meadow Store & Campground off Deerfield Rd (you can fuel up there), and also enjoyed a break at Deerfield Lake Recreation Area. There are so many scenic stops and incredible views along the way.We highly recommend Adventure Rentals—10/10!

Absolutely 5 stars! We try to rent ATVs on all our travels, and we've had some great ones before so a lot to compare to. This rates as up there with the best. Good explanation of the equipment (we did a side by side), suggestions on what to explore within the 4 hours. The GPS tablet is the BOMB! I thoroughly enjoyed navigating thru the tablet while my SigOther did all the driving. A wide variety of terrain and scenery, and we had the luck to run into cowboys rounding up cattle! Sat off the trail and watched that for a while! For sure will recommend to anyone I know going to this area.

They make the process easy and don’t make you worry about getting the machines washed before returning. We got to meet the owners this trip as well and spent a some time at their Bottoms Up Taproom just down the street from their Custer location. Such a fun experience! Great people! Thanks Adventure Rentals for another great trip! We will be back for sure!

We rented two Razors yesterday in Hill City, SD and had the greatest experience, not only with the trails and machines but the staff as well. All the staff were very friendly and thoroughly prepared us for a great time. Jayme, at the check in walked us through the registration and helped us pick the right machine. Kyle knows the SD trails very well and showed well where we'd find the best trails that fit what we'd enjoy most. Colby walked through how to operated the machines in a safe and a way we'd find what these powerful machines are capable of. Next time we go to Hill City, we'll rent here again and trust me, you should too.

So much fun!!! Adventure rentals was super helpful from the booking process, explaining everything we needed to know, and giving us everything we may need out on the trail! I thought this would be fun but I had no idea how much we were going to love this! We were a group of 6 that went out together and this is something we will talk about for years to come! We had a wonderful experience with Adventure Rentals Hill City! We loved our rental and enjoyed hours of trails across two days. The staff were accommodating, friendly and knowledgeable. The extra roadside coverage was well worth the cost for a piece of mind. Our unit overheated and within a half hour someone from Adventure Rentals showed up to help so we could get back on the road. We will be renting from them again!

I own a sxs and would never take it out on this terrain. Fortunately, adventure rentals has top line lil tanks that can take this abuse daily.
